The Issue

Chicano history is Arizona history.

Our barrios, families, culture, art, traditions, and contributions are an important part of the story of Phoenix, yet too often this history is overlooked or forgotten.

That is why we are asking the City of Phoenix to add “Chicano Park” to the name of Barrios Unidos Park, creating the name Chicano Park Barrios Unidos.

The City of Phoenix itself recognizes Nuestros Barrios Unidos as an area “defined by its rich Chicano history.” The neighborhood was once referred to as the Mexican barrios and El Campito and remains connected to long-standing residential communities and local parks.

For generations, Chicano families have contributed to the vitality, character, culture, and development of Phoenix. Our communities have created businesses, art, traditions, families, neighborhoods, and cultural institutions that continue to shape the city today.

Naming this park Chicano Park Barrios Unidos would be more than adding words to a sign. It would be a lasting acknowledgment of the people and communities whose history is connected to this place.

It would give future generations a public space where they can see their heritage represented, learn the stories of those who came before them, celebrate their traditions, and take pride in the history of their community.

Arizona's Latino population also represents a significant part of our state's story. According to the Pew Research Center, Arizona had approximately 2.1 million Hispanic residents, representing about 31% of the state's population in 2014, based on U.S. Census Bureau data.

But this petition is not simply about numbers. It is about history, identity, place, and recognition.

The name Chicano Park Barrios Unidos would honor the generations who came before us while creating a lasting reminder for the generations who will follow.

This is an opportunity for Phoenix to recognize a part of its history that deserves to be visible and celebrated in a public space.

We are asking the Phoenix City Council to formally recognize the cultural and historical significance of this community by adding “Chicano Park” to the name of Barrios Unidos Park.

Let's make sure our public spaces tell the complete story of Phoenix—one that recognizes the families, cultures, and communities that helped build it.
