Citi Field needs a zero delay in-park Mets radio feed, like Nationals Park
The Issue
One of the best parts about going to Citi Field used to be bringing a personal radio and tuning in to the Mets play-by-play broadcast as you watched the game. Beginning in 2021, there is now a 7-10 second delay for WCBS 880 AM and even more with the Audacy app. By the time Wayne and Howie call a play, it is long over.
At Nationals Park, there is a small in-park radio broadcast accessible at 68.5 FM with no delay which allows fans to enjoy the radio broadcast along with the game. The Nationals have promoted this by giving away lanyards attached to a small radio earpiece pre-tuned to this frequency.
In addition, this is an excellent way to allow blind and visually impaired fans to experience the game as it happens. Instead of waiting in anticipation for the radio feed to catch up, those fans can enjoy each moment as it happens.
It would be wonderful if the Mets did something similar and brought back the option to hear live play-by-play at the ballpark. I know there are broadcasting regulations to consider, but it seems the Nationals have achieved this with
- A very low-power transmission accessible only inside the stadium
- Using a frequency outside the FM radio broadcast band, 87.8 - 108 MHz. (The Nationals use 68.5 FM)
For me personally, this feature would greatly increase my visits to Citi Field and enjoyment of attending games there.
