Justice for live pig thrown off bungee tower at Chinese theme park
Justice for live pig thrown off bungee tower at Chinese theme park
The Issue
A live pig has been pushed off a 68-meter high Bungee tower in south-western China as part of a cruel PR stunt. The pig was later sent to slaughter.
The stunt was used to entertain guests during the launch of a new bungee tower at Meixin Red Wine Town in Chongqing. Video footage shows the pig tied to a pole, carried by two men to the top of a tower before being pushed off.
The one-year-old, 75kg pig, was heard squealing in desperation as workers bound it to a wooden stick, carried up the structure and dragged it to the edge of the bungee platform before attaching a safety harness and pushing it off the edge. It is still unclear whether this animal was a male or a female and whether he or she sustained any injuries during the stunt.
The event, which took place on 18 January 2020, garnered widespread outrage as global news outlets reported the incident. The story can be seen everywhere from the New York Times to the BBC - and the global community is outraged.
Animal rights and welfare activists have condemned the act, calling it 'disgusting' and 'cruelty to animals at its worst'. One social media user said 'The pig's screams are heart-rending.'
The purpose of this petition is to let Chinese animal rights activists know we stand with you in solidarity, and to let the Chinese government know that ENOUGH is ENOUGH!
We are sick to death of animals being treated as commodities to use and abuse as the mood strikes. We are sick to death of individuals being reduced to mere 'things' to be used and discarded like trash with no ramifications.
There are currently no nationwide laws in China that explicitly prohibit the mistreatment of animals - this is insanity. It is time for China to upgrade its outdated animal protection laws. Read about how outdated they are here and here.
WHAT WE WANT
- PUBLICLY NAME THE PR COMPANY that produced this stunt - the world deserves to know who you are.
- PUBLICLY NAME THE AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION who produced the pig - the world deserves to know who you are.
- MEIXIN RED WINE TOWN MUST DO MORE THAN APOLOGISE - the theme park should be forced to donate a large sum of money to a local animal rights organisation.
- LEGISLATION MUST CHANGE - support your local activists by spreading awareness about China's animal welfare laws so that legislation can change!
Some facts about pigs...
Pigs are extraordinarily intelligent. They are curious and insightful animals who are widely accepted as being smarter than young children of at least 3 years of age, dogs, and even some primates.
Pigs are extremely social animals. They form close bonds with other individuals and love close contact and lying down together.
Pigs are some of the most abused animals on earth. :(
