Crack down on cruel killing of street dogs by municipal authorities
The Issue
There is a big problem of abandoned street dogs in Chile. Thousands of animals live on the streets and every year thousands die from disease, accidents, poisioning, abuse and starvation. Every month more dogs and puppies are abandoned on the streets to a life of suffering. For years the animal rights activists have been petitioning the government to control the population with a massive spay and neuter campaign, education and rehoming efforts. The laws that exist to protect Chilean animals are not enforced by the legal system. Gross acts of animal cruelty are simply ignored or punished by a slap on the wrist. Recently video evidence was obtained of municipal workers euthanizing street dogs in broad daylight. The drug used cause convulsions and cardiac arrest. The dogs died in agony. This is not an isolated incident. It is known that municipal authorities use inhumane ways of eliminating street dogs on a regular basis, inclding the regular dispersal of the poision Strychnine. Many municipal kennels are filled with dogs that recive very little care and are fed only every three or four days. Please petition President Piñera to put a stop to this cruelty, to fund spay and neuter programs and education programs to teach the population about responsable animal care, to work with the varios organizations that are willing to assist in rescue, rehoming, education and spay and neuter efforts. Help us change the lives of thousands of street dogs.
