Stop Cruelty on Horses Pulling Carriages and used for Joy Rides in Kolkata

Almost 300 horses are commercially used to pull carriages in the area of the Victoria-Maidan, for tourists. These horses are poorly looked after and subjected to disproportional arduous work as a result of which they suffer from injury, malnutrition, chronic illnesses and death. COVID 19 induced lockdowns have further aggravated the problem due to poor business.
- There is no policy to regulate commercial uses of horses and guidelines for their protection or breeding.
- The older horses, who are abandoned and are left to starve, because they cannot pull the carriages anymore
- There is no agency from the government working out a rescue and rehabilitation plan which would require identification of stables where these horses could be sheltered and protected as well as finding a solution for the carriage owners for them to sustain their livelihoods
Eventually, the solution lies in elimination of horse drawn carriages in the city of Kolkata. The business cannot be commercially viable enough for the carriage owners to be able to provide food security, health care and protection from injuries and malnutrition.
Please sign my petition requesting the Hon'ble Chief Minister too look into the problem and save these horses from the miserable condition they are in.
