Odisha: Stop free land rights to slum dwellers. Instead provide them jobs to earn it.
The Issue
Urban land is becoming precious and its value is being appreciated day by day. There has been large-scale migration of people from rural areas to urban areas in search of employment/better opportunities. Some of these people who are migrating/migrated, have already acquired/owned some property in their respective native areas but after migrating have grabbed land which has created slums. There are also cases where many people also migrate but stay at rented/leased premises by spending their part of income on rent. A major population staying in urban areas earn a living but only can dream of owning a land/house in urban areas owing to its sky-high prices.
In this regard, the recent decision by the State of providing land rights to slum dwellers (for an area up to 45 sq. meters) for free is unfair on the part of all the families who reside in urban areas but not able to own any property. It is a petition from the educated public of the State to annul such decision made and instead initiate steps for better employment for everyone staying in the slums. So that they may be self-sufficient to purchase property as per their requirement at market rates and stay at par as other municipal tax paying residents of the city. Also, the vacated land may be used by the State for various development work or may be auctioned for getting higher revenue in lieu of the benchmark rates prevailing for that city. There also has to be strong rules in place for removing encroachments on Govt. lands.
Request all the knowledgeable & conscious citizens of the State to sign this petition so that the authorities may think in terms of overall economic development of the State and not in terms of political gain only.
