Chatham House: Reconsider hosting INEC officials amid Nigeria's compromised voters regist
The Issue

We call on Chatham House to immediately reconsider its decision to host Professor Amupitan of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as speakers at the upcoming event on 12th November.
Chatham House is globally renowned for upholding rigorous standards of accountability, governance, and democratic integrity. Hosting high-ranking officials from an institution currently facing intense public scrutiny over a compromised voters register risks inadvertently validating a deeply flawed electoral process.
The integrity of Nigeria's voters register is the bedrock of its democracy. Millions of voters face systemic disenfranchisement due to unresolved irregularities, unverified data, and a severe compromise in the register's credibility. Allowing INEC leadership a prestigious international platform to speak on 12th November, while domestic concerns regarding electoral manipulation remain unaddressed, undermines the struggle of regular Nigerian citizens fighting for free, fair, and transparent elections.
By hosting this event, Chatham House risks providing an unearned veneer of institutional legitimacy to an electoral body that has yet to restore domestic public trust.
We urge Chatham House to:
1. Suspend or postpone the 12th November event until an independent, verifiable audit of Nigeria's voters register has been publicly conducted and approved.
2. Include independent civic oversight bodies and opposition voices in the panel to guarantee a balanced, transparent, and critical discussion rather than a one-sided presentation.
Stand with Nigerian voters.
