ATTENTION PARENTS! CHARLOTTE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD IS CALLING AN EMERGENCY MEETING FOR FRIDAY AUGUST 20th IN THE AFTERNOON, TIME TO BE DETERMINED, SUBJECT TO BE DETERMINED (this MAY be about masks!)! I apologize for the length of this in advance!
Some background on this information!
I first spoke to Kim Amontree, the Chair of the Charlotte County board she told me that as of right now, a mask mandate has not been added to the agenda for September 9th regular meeting. At anytime, the superintendent can add something to the agenda, the board can call an emergency meeting or a board member at the meeting can add an agenda item (with a 2nd from another board member). I did not get a feeling on whether or not she supported a mask mandate AND she either did NOT yet know about Friday's meeting or neglected to tell me. Not sure which!
I then spoke to Cara Reynolds, who I REALLY REALLY like. She made it clear that she is FULLY AGAINST a mask mandate at this point. She went on to tell me that she had her 13 year old vaccinated so that he could NOT wear a mask but that her 2 younger kids were in fact wearing masks. She said unless something drastically changes that she believes that at this point masks should be up to parents. She said that at her kids school about 75% of kids are unmasked and that is what the majority of parents seem to want by unmasking their children. She did tell me that since July there have been 117 cases and that concerns her as the total for last year was about 550. She did not tell me about the emergency meeting either.
I then spoke to Bob Segur who let me know immediately that there was an emergency meeting scheduled for Friday afternoon and that he had no idea what the topic was and it could of course be masks. Bob's current stance is that He is uncomfortable with the younger kids (under 12) that can't be vaccinated, not wearing a mask. He believes that middle school and high school students that can be vaccinated should not need to wear a mask. We spoke about the governor's executive order (Bob is an attorney, in case you didn't know) and he believes it's unconstitutional. You may or may not know that there is a case against the governors EO that will be heard on Thursday. So we will know more then!
We NEED to watch the district website diligently as tehy need to post the agenda with 48 hours notice for the public but at this point, I would say CLEAR YOUR FRIDAY AFTERNOON FOLKS!!! LET'S BE HEARD ONCE AGAIN!!!!
