The Issue

Plastic pollution is a growing problem all over the world. 60 minutes and John Oliver have covered the plastic issue. Plastic is found in the stomachs of birds, fish and people. There is a mass of plastic bigger than France in the Pacific. Only a small fraction of single use plastics are recycled.

U. S. PIRG is promoting legislation to address the problem. Please tell US elected officials that the plastic problem is important to you. We are asking the US Congress to regulate the plastic industry--if not by banning single use plastics, by making single use plastic producers pay. The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act holds the manufacturers of single use plastics responsible. Something must be done to save our wildlife, our landscape, ourselves from the ridiculous amount of plastic that is not being recycled but is taking over the planet.

Only plastics labeled #1 and #2 are easily recycled and only a small fraction of those plastics are actually getting recycled. In theory, we could limit single use plastics to the two types that are easy to recycle and then try to make sure they get recycled. In practice, we are creating mountains and mountains of single use plastic waste. Please sign the petition to tell legislators and President Biden to regulate the plastics industry.
