My life forever changed when my son was murdered by two young boys, aged 12 and 14. And week later shot and killed another innocent person as well as shooting and injuring another 14 year old boy.  As a grieving parent, I find it incredibly difficult to comprehend how children so young could commit such a heinous act, but perhaps even more perplexing is the lack of accountability for the parents of these minors. Why should parents not bear responsibility when their children commit crimes of such magnitude?

In many countries, children under the age of 14 are considered too young to fully comprehend the consequences of their actions. However, this should not absolve their guardians from responsibility. Parents must ensure that their children are raised in an environment conducive to understanding right from wrong. Failing to do so should mean they are legally accountable for their children's actions.

Statistics show that juvenile crime, committed by children between the ages of 10 to 14, has been on the rise over the past decade in multiple regions, creating grave concerns about how society addresses underage felonies. With countless families destroyed by the actions of young offenders, it's time we reconsider how these cases are handled. Holding parents legally accountable could lead to more responsible upbringing and lower crime rates amongst juveniles.

Countries such as Spain and Germany have implemented laws where parents can be held accountable for acts committed by their minor children, leading to greater parental oversight and a decrease in youth crimes. Implementing similar laws could prompt parents to be more vigilant and involved in their child's life, helping prevent tragedies like the one that devastated my family.

This change won't bring my son back, but it may prevent another family from experiencing this pain. We must implore our legal systems to adopt legislative changes holding parents accountable for their underage children's crimes. Only through such reforms can we hope to curb the alarming increase in violent juvenile crimes.
