Charge Every Officer Who Let Anthony Mitchell Freeze to Death in Jail

Charge Every Officer Who Let Anthony Mitchell Freeze to Death in Jail
The Issue
Anthony Mitchell didn’t die in prison. He was killed in a jail cell — naked, starved, infected, and freezing to death while guards watched.
When Tony was arrested during a mental health check in Alabama, he needed help. Instead, he was locked in a windowless concrete cell nicknamed “the drunk tank.” The cell had no bed, no toilet, and no heat — and for days, jail staff left him there to deteriorate. When he died, his internal body temperature was 72 degrees. He had sepsis from infected wounds. He was emaciated. The coroner ruled it homicide.
Some of the officers involved have been charged. Others have pleaded guilty. But not every guard responsible has been held accountable — and we still don’t know how many people inside that jail saw what was happening and said nothing. According to one officer who took a plea deal: “We killed him.” That’s not exaggeration — it’s a confession.
This wasn’t a mistake. This wasn’t a failure of paperwork or procedure. This was torture. A man was left to die in state custody — while others feared retaliation just for trying to speak up. And unless we demand full criminal prosecution of every officer who had a hand in this — through action or silence — the system will do what it always does: protect itself.
We’re calling on the U.S. Department of Justice, the Civil Rights Division, and federal prosecutors in Alabama to charge every remaining officer involved in Anthony Mitchell’s death. We also demand a full public report on employment status, disciplinary actions, and whether any of the individuals involved still work in corrections today.
A man froze to death under government supervision — and if we don’t act now, we’re sending a message that it can happen again.
Add your name if you believe every officer who let Anthony Mitchell die deserves to be charged. There’s no justice until all of them are held accountable.
