Charge a windfall tax to the UK government & petrol firms to help businesses & motorists
The Issue
Petrol and diesel is anticipated to hit £2 a litre across the UK shortly. The UK Government charge 52.95p fuel duty on every litre plus charge VAT at 20% on the price of the fuel and on the fuel duty - https://obr.uk/forecasts-in-depth/tax-by-tax-spend-by-spend/fuel-duties/
As the price of fuel has increased the amount of VAT the government receives has been increasing as well as the profits of the petrol companies.
The cost of fuel is impacting on essential services, businesses, the cost of goods (including the cost of food) as well as the motorist.
Many of us rely our cars to get to work to keep industry and services running. People with reduced mobility often don't have much choice other than to rely on taxis and cars. The pressure of prices at the pump impacts on household budgets doubly - directly through fueling their own vehicles plus through the increased cost of food caused by increased haulage costs.
I propose that the UK Government act now to help businesses and households. This could be achieved through a windfall tax on the Government and on fuel companies, this money could be returned to the public through fuel vouchers or a direct rebate being applied at the point of purchase.
The longer petrol and diesel prices are allowed to increase the worst this situation will become. Most of the population are already struggling with the increasing cost of living, we can not cope with any further financial pressures.
