Feet on Franklin: Let's Seize the Moment in Chapel Hill

The Issue

Problems in the Pandemic:

  • Chapel Hill residents are hungry for somewhere to go and something to do!
  • We are seeking safe access to downtown with space for proper social distancing as we navigate phased re-openings in our community.
  • We are desperate for innovative ways to support local businesses and help our city weather the economic downturn.
  • Together we can capitalize on the climate change benefits of fewer transportation emissions (already happening during the shutdown) by opening up more opportunities for human-powered transportation.

Solutions within Reach:

  • We propose that Chapel Hill temporarily repurpose the 2 lanes of vehicle traffic on each side of Franklin street closest to the curb, similar to what many other cities across the nation are doing.
  • This will add space for restaurants to expand outdoor seating options onto sidewalks, operating at a safe distance without disrupting people passing by.
  • Protected pedestrian lanes will create more space for people to bike, walk, and run while complying with social distancing requirements.
  • With heavy promotion and clear signage, we can offer our Town a safe place to go and signal that Chapel Hill is innovative, responsive, and invested in our local economy!

Thank you to Melissa Hudgens (Leafy Greens Graphic Design), Tamara Rice (Slice Interactive), and Perri Kersh (Neat Freak) for their creative skills in helping to begin a conversation about this community concept.
