Move to pass/fail grading for high school students affected by COVID-19

The Issue

It is inarguable that we are facing unprecedented challenges due to the social impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak. School closures are an important step in slowing the spread of the virus, but will have negative consequences on students, all of whom are no longer able to have personal interactions with teachers and staff. Because students have lost the immersive learning environment and academic assistance provided by schools and teachers in lieu of untested "extended learning" via multiple online platforms, it is reasonable to assume that their academic performance will be negatively impacted. Additionally, the burden on students will be unfairly distributed due to their varying abilities to work with online material, each teacher's capacity to conduct online classes, and the impossibility of virtualizing many high school courses that are highly collaborative in nature. In this situation, it is probable that discrepancy in grades between students will be induced by differences in their online work experience rather than the effort they put into their class material. Due to these disproportionate academic impacts, high school students should be graded on a pass/fail basis, so as not to disadvantage students who face difficulties with the drastic changes in the operation of our schools.  Pass/fail grading will allow students to learn class material online without fear of harsh consequences on their GPAs in a time when there is rampant uncertainty, stress, and confusion. Many of our nation's finest universities (including MIT, Northwestern, and our own University of North Carolina) have already taken these steps, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system should follow suit.
