Allow parents to attend CHCCS High School outdoor sporting events in Spring 2021

The Issue

The CHCCS Board of Education adopted a policy in Fall 2020 that NO spectators are allowed at high school sporting events to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  While this is understandable for indoor winter sports, there is no scientific evidence that spread has occurred outdoors amongst a small, socially distanced, and masked population.  Governor Cooper's Executive Order #169 allows for outdoor gatherings of 100 people, and this standard has been adopted by the North Carolina State High School Athletic Association.  CHCCS is one of the only (perhaps THE only) districts in the state to not accept this guidance and has adopted a more stringent one-off standard.  For those of us with student-athletes in high school (especially seniors), we have precious little time left to see our children on the field of play.  It is safe, reasonable, and enforceable to allow parents to attend the events.  In fact, after a parental uproar in November, the Wake County Board of Education changed their initial policy decision and is now allowing parents to attend events.  If the largest school district in NC can manage this change, the CHCCS district can certainly do the same.
