Changing the State Anthem of Florida to “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson

Changing the State Anthem of Florida to “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson
The Issue
Originally, Florida’s State Anthem was “Old Folks At Home” sometimes called “Swanee River.” It was later changed to “Where The Sawgrass Meets The Sky” due to its mentioning of longing for a plantation, not to mention the composer, Stephen Foster, was not even from nor lived in Florida. The later song was composed by Jan Hinton, a woman who lived in Florida upwards of 10 years before writing the song. While this is not just about someone born and raised in Florida writing the song, this is more of the song itself. Many others I’ve spoken to from Florida just don’t quite care for the song, and we have found some common ground on the song “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson. Not only does it mention Florida’s history and the Seminole people of Florida, but it also strives to stop the environmental destruction of Florida. And if it matters much to you, John Anderson was born and raised in Florida. And while this isn’t a traditionally anthem sounding song, I should mention from my research, Florida’s neighbor Georgia does not have a traditional anthem either. While I could be wrong, “Georgia On My Mind” was made the state anthem in 1979. So please, sign to encourage Ron DeSantis to advocate Florida to change their anthem to “Seminole Wind”
