Change Walk of Fame criteria for posthumous recognition in Wigan

Change Walk of Fame criteria for posthumous recognition in Wigan

The Issue

The people in Wigan have always been inspired by the stories of remarkable individuals from our community whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the town. Yet, so many of these individuals remain unrecognized in the way they deserve. As for the people of Wigan who deeply passionate about celebrating Wigan's rich history and the incredible people who have shaped it, I propose an amendment to the Walk of Fame criteria to include posthumous local figures—heroes who have passed on but whose legacies continue to inspire us today.

The concept of the Walk of Fame is to honor those who have significantly influenced their fields and communities such as Davey Boy Smith and many others. However, the current criteria overlook many posthumous local figures who have played pivotal roles in Wigan's cultural, scientific, and artistic achievements. Recognizing these individuals posthumously not only brings honor to their memory but also educates and inspires future generations about the tremendous contributions made by their predecessors.

In the neighboring regions, like Liverpool and Manchester, walks of fame and similar honors have successfully included posthumous recognition. This has strengthened community pride and appreciation for local heritage. We can and should do the same in Wigan.

According to the Wigan Archives Service, numerous posthumous figures have had a significant impact on our town. For example, Thomas Higham, a trailblazer in local industry whose innovations shaped modern Wigan, or Mary Shields, whose contributions to social reforms transformed countless lives. Their stories are Wigan stories, and they deserve a prominent place on Wigan Walk of Fame.

My proposed changes to the Walk of Fame selection criteria would include a nomination process open to all residents, where individuals can propose posthumous candidates who have made outstanding contributions to Wigan. A committee comprised of historians, local leaders, and citizens could review these nominations, ensuring a fair and comprehensive recognition of town's icons.

I urge the Wigan Council to consider this change and work with us to create a Walk of Fame that truly represents all aspects of our community's heritage. By doing so, we can ensure that the achievements of those who built the foundation of Wigan town are never forgotten.

Please join me in acknowledging and immortalizing the contributions of Wigan's posthumous local heroes by signing this petition. Together, we can honor the past and inspire the future.
