Change Unfair Laws Barring Victims with Unspent Convictions from C.I.C.A

The Issue

I stand before you today not just as one individual but as a symbol of countless victims who've been denied their rightful claim to criminal injury compensation due to outdated laws. The laws, enacted in 2012, declare victims with unspent convictions ineligible for claiming any compensation—a glaring injustice in our modern society.

Our struggle revolves around a disturbing incident that closely aligns with my personal story. Due to no fault of my own, I found myself in trouble with the law; the daily torment, wrought by relentless bullying, created circumstances that made it impossible for me to take my child to school regularly. Consequently, I was fined, pleaded guilty, and served a probation order. It is only one of the many ways in which life can take a cruel turn, and one can find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Then, when I found myself victim to further abuse, including the battery, rape, and false imprisonment, with 32 separate accounts documented, the system failed me again. Given my previous conviction for an unrelated incident, I was unjustly deemed ineligible to claim the compensation that was rightfully mine.

The criminal who caused my suffering was sentenced to 14 years, yet I, the victim, was denied justice under the umbrella of an outdated law. We live in a world where victims are punished while perpetrators continue to cause harm. This brings us to question—where is the justice?

The law should not exclude any victim from claiming compensation, regardless of their past. Compassion, understanding, and justice should form the foundations upon which such important legislation stands. We urge a reconsideration of these outdated, unempathetic laws that victimize the victims.

Help rectify this glaring loophole in our legal system. Stand with us, reminding the authorities of their responsibility to protect the rights of all victims. Sign this petition today and help change the future for those who deserve justice. Allow all victims to receive their rightful claim to criminal injury compensation, irrespective of their past challenges.
