Change the way sexual crimes are investigated against women

The Issue

I've been at the receiving end of a system that fails to support victims of sexual crimes. Two male officers concluded that there was insufficient evidence when I reported being raped by a man. This is not just my story, but echoes the experiences of countless women who feel let down by an investigative process that lacks sensitivity and understanding.

Sexual crimes against women are extremely sensitive, with nuances and complexities that can be better comprehended by female officers. It stands to reason that investigations involving female victims would benefit significantly from having female officers lead the inquiry. Given that women often feel more comfortable speaking to female officers, they may feel more secure to disclose details needed for a comprehensive investigation.

Unfortunately, the existing procedure may fail to deliver the justice we so desperately need. The change, we seek, is not to distrust male officers, but to introduce a system where female officers predominantly conduct investigations into sexual crimes against women. This change can lead to more empathetic and thorough investigations, ensuring that every victim’s voice is heard and taken seriously.

Statistics reveal a harrowing landscape: according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), only 13% of all rape and sexual assault cases result in an arrest. One of the hurdles to overcoming this disheartening statistic is ensuring that the early stages of an investigation are handled with the utmost care and understanding. Female-led inquiries can bridge the gap in understanding and help foster an environment where victims feel safe and supported.

We envision a future where women feel empowered to report crimes without the fear of being silenced or ignored. Implementing this policy will not only validate their experiences but also strengthen the effectiveness of investigations, potentially increasing conviction rates and bringing justice to victims.

Join us in advocating for a crucial change within our justice system. Sign this petition to call on relevant authorities to adopt a policy where sexual crimes against women are investigated by female officers, ensuring a supportive, empathetic, and thorough investigative process for all victims. Your signature can help amplify this call for change, driving us closer to justice for every woman who has suffered in silence.
