Change the University of Lincoln Graduation Times (2023)

The Issue

In September, third year University of Lincoln students will be graduating. The timing system for graduation is ineffective and unfair. The Schools of Design, Creative Arts, Education and Health and Social Care will not graduate until 7:30pm. This is unfair and discriminatory on the followinging grounds:

  • Students graduating at this time will not properly get to spend graduation with their families during the day.
  • They will not get to celebrate a full day of graduation with a ceremony that finishes at 10pm.
  • It discriminates and disadvantages families and students who are travelling a long way. Having a graduation so late in the day is based on the assumption that families can afford hotel rooms, which directly discriminates low income families and is a disgusting assumption to make during a cost of living crisis.
  • Students graduating in the 7:30pm time slot will have to pay double (2 days) for their hat and gown hire, whereas those in the early time slots will only need to pay for 1 day.

All students graduating have worked equally hard through very tough circumstances to graduate. They have the right to celebrate graduation equally and fairly. It is absolutely essential that the University of Lincoln change the graduation times for the students affected. All graudations should take place in the morning or early afternoon for the fairness the students deserve.
