The issue
I am a resident of Cardinia Shire, and like many in our community, my family and I find ourselves unprepared for the rapidly approaching bushfire season. The current start date for the fire danger period has caught us off guard, leaving us without adequate time to prepare our homes and properties to effectively mitigate the risk of bushfires.
Cardinia Shire has always been a community surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, but with this beauty comes the responsibility to ensure that our residents are safe from the threat of bushfires. Bushfires in Australia are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, exacerbated by climate change and often unexpected shifts in weather patterns that make traditional bushfire timelines less predictable. According to a 2020 report from the Bureau of Meteorology, the average temperature in Australia has increased by about 1.44°C since 1910, leading to longer and more intense fire seasons.
The current start date for the fire danger period does not seem to reflect these changes nor accommodate the preparation needs of the residents in our shire. Many of us have been left with insufficient time to clear vegetation, clean our gutters, and implement other essential fire prevention measures. This unpreparedness places not only our homes and properties at risk but also jeopardizes the safety and wellbeing of our families and community.
What we are calling for is a reassessment and adjustment of the start date for the fire danger period in Cardinia Shire.
