Change the Staffing to Patient ratio Laws in nursing

The Issue

With healthcare costs constantly rising to unaffordable amounts for most of our elderly population, healthcare facilities and skilled nursing facilities are constantly failing to meet the demand with proper care and resources.

The current state Law in Kansas is currently 1 nurse to 30 patients, and 1 CNA up to 2O patients. These staff members have to provide daily care for severely sick patients with wounds, and lots of extensive medical needs. Some patients are obese and require 2-3 staff members for assistance in daily living activities, you have to keep the dementia patients from leaving the building and staying safe, you have addiction patients and mental health patients that have extreme behaviors all while trying to meet the expectations of the employers and not risk loosing your license or being investigated for medical neglect.. The State is set with laws for health care agencies mandating subordinate care yet the structure of most healthcare facilities are not set up to allow that need to be met.
Healthcare staff get burned out quickly, become mentally and emotionally depleted by the attacks of their inability to meet the inevitable expectations from management, patients and patient family members. This is has been an ongoing problem even before Covid. This is causing high turnover rates in employees, leaving the impact of short staffed facilities considerably and only growing the increasing concern of proper care In healthcare facilities.
The current staff to patient ratio laws need to be reviewed to ensure adequate and proper care is able to be obtained. The last time Kansas was changed was almost 20 years ago and healthcare has changed so much since then. Patients are dying and suffering daily because they can’t receive the standard care they need because of these set laws. If we don’t do something now our healthcare field is going to essentially crumble and we won’t have anyone to help provide the care our sick and elderly patients need.
