The Issue

On June 17th, 2026, a tragic accident took the lives of two innocent children, Harry and Katherine, when a car struck the pram they were in outside the city in Cabramatta. Although this heart-wrenching incident did not occur in a designated school zone, it has ignited a passionate call for change to prevent similar tragedies in areas where children are most vulnerable.

In school zones across our country, where the safety of our children should be paramount, the current speed limits are often too high. The difference of a few miles per hour can be the difference between life and death. Studies have shown that reducing speed limits in school zones significantly decreases the likelihood of accidents and fatalities. According to the World Health Organization, a reduction in speed by just 1 km/h can lead to a 4-5% decrease in fatal crashes.

We propose that all school zones adopt a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h. This limit is already in effect in various parts of the world, where it has proven to greatly enhance the safety of children. For instance, in Sweden, a country recognized for its exemplary road safety record, the implementation of a similar speed limit has resulted in a remarkable reduction in road traffic deaths.

Implementing a 30 km/h speed limit in school zones is a simple, yet highly effective measure that can save countless lives. It is not just about compliance, but about prioritizing and safeguarding the lives of our children. We urge local governments, city councils, and transportation authorities to take immediate action to protect our kids by adopting this life-saving measure.

Let us honour the memory of Harry and Katherine by creating safer environments for all children. By signing this petition, you are standing with us in advocating for safer school zones and ensuring that the lives of our future generations are secured.
