The Issue

When we moved to our new town, we were filled with hope and excitement about starting a fresh journey as part of this community. However, our enthusiasm quickly turned to dismay just a week into the school year. My seven-year-old came home deeply upset, crying over a sign she saw outside her teacher's door that read "Little demons in training." It is disheartening to witness our school system portraying our children as anything other than promising young individuals deserving respect and encouragement.

The current school mascot, reflecting demonic imagery, is not just a symbol—it is a signal. A signal of what values and images our school, and thereby our community, choose to promote. As someone whose religious and personal beliefs entirely oppose such representations, I find it difficult to reconcile with a mascot that opposes our deeply held beliefs. Our children, mine included, are being forced to confront imagery that conflicts with their upbringing and values—preventing them from participating in school activities and sports due to something they have no control over.

The role of a mascot is to bring unity and pride, to symbolize positive and encouraging traits. But when a mascot spreads negativity and controversy, it divides instead of unites. Numerous studies outline the significant role mascots play in building school spirit and community identity. The National Federation of State High School Associations suggests that an ideal mascot embodies a positive and inclusive message, one that every student feels proud to rally behind.

Our intention isn't to dismantle traditions, but to foster an inclusive environment where all students feel safe, respected, and proud. By choosing a mascot that promotes positivity and inclusivity, we can celebrate every student's background and beliefs without exclusion. There are countless symbols that can convey strength, courage, and teamwork without alienating parts of our community.

As parents, neighbors, and educators who genuinely care for the well-being of our children, let's advocate for a change that aligns with our values and promotes a healthy learning environment. Sign this petition if you believe our school should represent inclusive, positive images that all our kids can participate in wholeheartedly.
