The Issue

When I was first prescribed topical steroids, no one informed me about the potential side effects and risks that come with using them. As someone who suffers from Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), I can tell you firsthand how excruciating the condition can be. It's a battle I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. This petition aims to ensure that others are informed about these risks right from the outset and that prescribing practices are changed to prevent this suffering.

Topical steroids, while effective for certain skin conditions, are often handed out like candy. Many people are unaware of the potential adverse effects such as TSW, which can lead to severe skin redness, burning, itching, and in extreme cases, systemic issues. Statistics show that a significant number of individuals who use topical steroids for prolonged periods suffer from these debilitating withdrawal symptoms, yet this information is rarely conveyed by healthcare professionals at the time of prescription. TSW is actually mentioned in the side effects on the leaflets inside the box, yet when we express our concern that we have any withdrawal, gps gaslight us into thinking it’s not a real thing and we just have ‘severe eczema’.  My question is, why is it a listed side effect yet gps don’t believe in it?

It is crucial that medical practitioners provide comprehensive counseling when prescribing these medications. Patients deserve to know the long-term risks and potential side effects involved. Informed consent should be standard practice, empowering patients to make educated decisions about their health. This can be accomplished by implementing mandatory informative sessions before a prescription is given, ensuring that every individual is fully aware of what they might face.

Additionally, we advocate for a revision of current prescription guidelines to limit the indiscriminate use of topical steroids. They should not be the go-to solution for every skin issue without thorough exploration of alternative treatments and a careful consideration of the patient’s medical history and potential allergens.

Please join me in urging healthcare authorities to reconsider how topical steroids are prescribed. We seek a commitment to patient safety and education that acknowledges every individual's right to understand the treatments they are receiving and the potential consequences thereof. Your signature can help ensure that no one else has to endure the unexpected journey of TSW unprepared and uninformed.
