The Issue

Growing up in the United States, the Pledge of Allegiance is often recited in schools, government meetings, and patriotic events. However, I find myself feeling uneasy during this ritual, particularly when I reach the part that declares, "One nation under God." As an atheist, this phrase does not reflect my beliefs. Furthermore, it fails to acknowledge the core principle of separation between church and state, a foundational value upon which our country stands.

The pledge was originally authored in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and Christian socialist, and it gained its present form in 1954 when the phrase "under God" was inserted. This alteration was at odds with the nation's principles of religious freedom and secular governance. The United States prides itself on being a melting pot—a diverse nation composed of cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Millions of Americans adhere to various religions, some of which do not recognize or worship a deity, while others follow different theological paths entirely.

The inclusion of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance implicitly endorses monotheism, which can make non-religious citizens and those of different faiths feel excluded. It counteracts the very essence of inclusion and equality that our nation strives to uphold. According to a 2018 report by the Pew Research Center, 26% of Americans identify as unaffiliated with any religion, a figure that has continued to grow over the years. This significant demographic shouldn't feel alienated during national ceremonies or feel compelled to participate in rituals that conflict with their beliefs.

Moreover, the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment explicitly necessitates the separation of church and state, and integrating a specific religious component into a national symbol seems contrary to this clause. Maintaining this separation is essential in ensuring that all citizens feel represented and respected, irrespective of their religious or non-religious stance.

To truly encapsulate the spirit of the United States—a nation built on principles of freedom and equality—we must update the pledge to reflect the diversity of its people. A more inclusive version might simply omit "under God," allowing citizens of all faiths and those without faith to pledge allegiance to their country with sincerity.

Let us urge the United States government to honor the diversity of its citizens by revising the Pledge of Allegiance. Please sign this petition to support a pledge that honors both our nation's rich diversity and its foundational principle of separation between church and state. Your support can lead us toward a more inclusive and unified nation.
