Change the Ontario Secondary School Diploma- MODIFICIATIONS ON A STUDENT TO STUDENT BASIS!
The Issue
LUCA'S LEARNING LAW!!!! - MODIFICATION ON A STUDENT TO STUDENT BASIS!
An individual education plan (IEP) is a written plan that describes special education programs, accommodations and services - that a school board will provide for a student. IEPs are based on a thorough assessment of a student’s strengths, needs and ability to learn and demonstrate learning.
This IEP is either modified or accommodated or both in both elementary school and highschool. It is a legal document.
However, what happens when your child gets to HighSchool and this legal document of MODIFICATIONS (specifically) doesn't allow them to be successful in getting a FULL HIGHSCHOOL DIPLOMA?
An Ontario Secondary Diploma and Ontario Secondary School Certificate , allow for accommodations to be made, but DO NOT ALLOW any MODIFICATIONS in expectations, while students need to demonstrate full independent achievement of ALL expectations in the courses. This on top of little to NO EA support. With that being said, the EA support doesn't essentially do any good if a child is modified and can't receive credit for their specific course.
"At the secondary level, the principal will determine whether achievement of the modified expectations constitutes successful completion of the course, and will decide whether the student will be eligible to receive a credit for the course" (Ontario Schools : Kindergarten to Grade 12: Policy and Program Requirements)
" All kids in LLS, REGARDLESS OF their disability they deserve the right to be successful within their own capabilities" - ONE OF THE MANY STANCES FROM PARENTS
THIS HAS TO CHANGE!!! If a teacher is implementing the requirements of the IEP - with modifications - this should NOT prevent a child from receiving a credit, and ultimately, a high school diploma! NO MATTER HOW MODIFIED! If a child is capable of completing a course, with modifications to meet their needs - they should receive the credit!
The purpose of an IEP is to address and pull out a students strengths and needs to reach a goal in a subject area!
Putting a halt on all the IEP modifications a child has had to be successful in elementary school and stopping this in highschool only goes against ALL the work society is doing to allow our special needs students to be welcomed and ready in the mainstream community!
LETS GET THIS CHANGED!! ALLOW MODIFICATIONS IN THE HIGHSCHOOL CURRICULUM (following the IEP)- TO REACH A FULL HIGHSCHOOL DIPLOMA OR CERTIFICATE IN ORDER TO MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL CHILDREN!!
THERE SHOULD BE NO QUESTION ABOUT IT!
