Change The NY State Park Pass System To Make It More Affordable
Change The NY State Park Pass System To Make It More Affordable
The Issue
The NY state park pass system is too expensive, because it is not tied to the vehicle registration system. I lived in MI for a few years and they have a Recreation Passport that only costs $15 a year and you can purchase it when you pay for your yearly vehicle registration. This lowers the per person cost by spreading it out amongst the state residents. Most people get the pass on their vehicles just to have it. The Secretary of State (their DMV) does a good job of advertising it on their site, in the offices, and they ask you when you register in person. My petition is to suggest that NY do the same thing, this will streamline the process of obtaining a pass (don't have to go to a park or order online.) It would allow park staff to focus on public safety and maintenance rather than pass sales. I am sure that many NY would be ok with a $25 or $30 extra on their registration if it was sold to them as unlimited vehicle access to state parks and beaches. NY could limit the pass usage at specific sites during peak periods, such as state beaches during the summer, and charge an additional daily fee. Overall, this scheme would probably give NYS parks more money and perhaps drive more visitors to the out of the way parks. With $10 to enter most parks...$15 for a year or $30 for 2 would be an amazing deal. Right now the amazing deal is an $800 lifetime pass. Which is great if you are 20 years old.
