Change the name of the city park to honor community heroes

The Issue

In the heart of our city, there lies a park frequented by families, friends, and our vibrant community. But this park, though full of life, holds a name that means little to the spirit and values of our community. We propose to rename Jerry Ivey Park to better reflect the unsung heroes who have shaped our community and provided our youth with countless opportunities for success.

Growing up in this community, I remember countless afternoons spent in that park, learning from community leaders and taking part in youth programs that changed the trajectory of many lives, including my own. These leaders never asked for accolades or recognition, yet their contributions nurtured future generations and instilled values of hard work, perseverance, and unity in us.

Renaming this park is not just a symbolic gesture, but a genuine effort to weave our community's history into its very fabric. Recognizing these heroes in this way stands as a reminder of the paths they paved and the future they helped us create. It will inspire both young and old alike to continue their work, fostering an environment of care and achievement in our community.

Statistics show that honoring local heroes in public spaces can greatly increase community involvement and pride. A study by the National Trust for Historic Preservation found that such gestures help communities connect deeply with their history and effectively engage youth in honoring their predecessors' legacies.

I urge the City Council of Salina to consider this change as a way to honor those who have dedicated their lives to uplifting others. Let’s come together and celebrate the very best of our community—its people. Renaming Jerry Ivey Park is a chance to leave a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Please sign this petition to ensure our community’s heroes receive the recognition they so richly deserve. Together, we can make this meaningful change happen.
