Change the minimum social media age to 14
Change the minimum social media age to 14
The issue
Life can be really tough when you're 13 and need to connect with friends, share experiences, and just have fun in a way that's normal for our generation. Social media is a huge part of our lives. It's where we chat about school stuff, celebrate each other's successes, and offer support when things get rough.
Imposing an age limit of 16 to access these platforms puts many of us in a difficult position. It's not just about being part of a social circle; it's about maintaining mental and emotional wellbeing. For me and my friends, hanging out online is crucial. Without it, we feel isolated—not just from each other, but from the world.
According to a 2022 survey, 70% of teens say social media is vital for maintaining friendships, and 85% of young people report having more social connections online than in real life. Cutting off access until 16 doesn't prepare us for the digital age; it leaves us out and disconnected.
We're not asking for unchecked freedom. We're asking for an age adjustment that recognizes our need for online interaction while ensuring safe use. Parental controls and education about internet safety can help bridge the gap. Shouldn't we be teaching responsibility and balance, rather than imposing a blanket ban?
Making social media accessible from age 14 would allow us to mature with guidance, not in isolation. It will also provide a platform for personal growth, learning, and understanding of the digital world.
Join me in requesting a change to the age restriction on social media to 14. By doing this, we can ensure that our generation isn't left behind. Sign this petition to help make this change a reality.
