Our beloved pet dog, Shadow, was more than just a pet; he was my son's therapy dog, a cherished member of our family. Shadow tragically died at the tender age of two because he was refused an emergency, out-of-hours appointment. We were left devastated, forced to sit helplessly and watch him suffer for four hours, waiting for his regular vet to open. When the time finally came, it was too late; after emergency surgery, he died. The animal hospital that refused us offered a paltry £120 as a 'goodwill gesture' for their admitted mistakes, but their apology is far from enough.
Currently, under English law, pets are classified as property. This outdated classification means that when tragedy strikes, and we lose our beloved companions due to negligence, families like ours cannot seek justice for our loss. There's no legal recourse for grief, distress, or trauma endured by a family, regardless of how apparent the vet's negligence may be.
