The Issue

In our community, countless lives are being tragically lost. Families are torn apart, dreams are shattered, and futures are dimmed – all because of gun violence, predominantly committed by individuals under the age of 25. The toll on our community is immense and the pain unbearable. These young individuals often do not grasp the irreversible consequences of pulling that trigger, not only ending a life but altering theirs forever.

Statistics illuminate a grim reality: according to the CDC, firearms are a leading cause of death among young adults, with individuals aged 18 to 24 being significantly overrepresented in gun-related crimes. In 2021 alone, over 24,000 people within this age group were victims or perpetrators in gun-related incidents. It's a crisis that demands urgent action.

We propose that the minimum legal age for owning and carrying a firearm be raised to 25 years old. This change will not only reduce the number of guns in the hands of impulsive youth but also grant more time for maturity and responsible decision-making to develop. Other countries with similar laws have seen a significant decrease in firearm-related homicides among young adults.

To make this change, we need your support. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer community, where our young people have a chance to grow and live without the looming threat of gun violence. Let's provide a safer environment for our families and future generations.

Please sign this petition to support raising the legal age for firearm ownership and carrying to 25, and join us in taking a stand against needless violence and loss in our community. Together, we can make a difference and create a future without fear. In memory of Anthony Levi Hodge
