Change the ceiling for budgeting advance on Universal Credit
The Issue
I am a lone parent, striving to make ends meet on an annual income of nearly £12,000, which translates to less than £1,000 per month. Despite my best efforts, my financial obligations continually outweigh my earnings and the benefits I receive. With 55% of my earnings offset after a small threshold, I'm left in a financial limbo, unable to access support or conventional loans from FCA covered lenders.
In the current setup of Universal Credit, a single person's budgeting advance is capped at £2,600, and for joint claimants, it's £3,600. This ceiling is starkly inadequate for someone in my position who is not eligible even for this 'advance.' The current system fails to reflect reality for many individuals and families like mine, who are juggling rising living costs, expensive childcare, and unexpected essential purchases such as a new washing machine.
The inadequacy of the current budgeting advance cap means that when an unexpected expense arises, people like me have no safety net. The high cost of childcare makes increasing working hours unfeasible, locking us into a loop of financial strain. This financial assistance cap needs a comprehensive review and adjustment to meet contemporary living standards and inflation, ensuring it truly supports those in need.
By adjusting the ceiling for budgeting advances, we can provide much-needed flexibility and relief, allowing countless families and individuals to address unforeseen expenses without falling into deeper debt. We request the Department for Work and Pensions to reassess and raise the budgeting advance limits, reflecting the genuine living costs and securing financial dignity for all Universal Credit claimants.
Please sign this petition to urge a review of the budgeting advance limits, offering a lifeline for those striving to provide a stable environment for themselves and their families.
