The Issue

My family and I are currently facing a financial challenge that is now becoming too common for families across the United States. We have two children who will be attending college simultaneously, and unfortunately, the current FAFSA formulas don't take multiple siblings in college into proper account. This puts an undue financial burden on families like ours, who strive to provide equal educational opportunities for our children. We are being financially penalized for having more than one child in college at once.

The old FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) methodology allocated financial aid by dividing the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), now SAI by the number of students in college, but the new version does not.

To mitigate this, we propose that FAFSA return to the previous method of dividing equally the SAI for families with two or more children in college concurrently.

According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, over 25% of families in the United States have more than one child enrolled in college at the same time, amplifying this widespread issue.

This change would provide much-needed relief to families navigating the expensive world of higher education and equal opportunity for education without the worry of debilitating student loans. Ensuring our financial aid system accurately reflects family circumstances will help many families, including ours, to send their children to college without such overwhelming financial pressure.

I urge President Trump, the Department of Education,  and federal lawmakers to take immediate action to revise the FAFSA formulas and practices to better support families with multiple college rather than punish them.

If this administration really is pro-family, it needs to show it by fixing this problem now!
