Change the Age of Consent Laws to Protect Young People

The issue

As a survivor of sexual exploitation, I have experienced firsthand the devastating consequences of being groomed and abused by an older individual. At the age of 15, I was manipulated into a relationship with a man who was significantly older, and we did not formally date until I was 16. The power imbalance in our relationship was stark, with the older individual exerting control over me in a way that was reminiscent of a paternalistic relationship. Unfortunately, our relationship was marked by physical and emotional abuse, and it had a profound impact on my mental health.

I am concerned that the current legal framework in Victoria, which allows individuals aged 16 and above to engage in sexual activity with anyone of any age except for those in positions of authority, may be contributing to the normalization of significant age gaps in relationships. This has resulted in an alarming number of young people entering into relationships with much older partners, often leading to exploitation, abuse, and long-term mental health consequences.

In contrast, the law in Victoria permits individuals aged 12 to give consent to sexual activity as long as there is no more than a two-year age gap. I believe that this threshold should be applied across all ages from 12 to 18, to ensure that young people are protected from predatory relationships and empowered to make informed decisions about their bodies.

I urge lawmakers to reconsider the age of consent laws and take steps to prevent exploitation and abuse. By signing this petition, we can work together to create a safer and more equitable environment for young people.
