The Issue

I am reaching out in the hope of initiating a crucial conversation about the way student loan repayments are calculated in relation to income. Like many others, I have entered the workforce with high hopes and aspirations, only to be burdened by significant student loan repayments. Despite achieving a salary above the threshold, I find myself facing a frustrating financial struggle.

Currently, the government's process of calculating student loan repayments based on net income rather than gross income has left many of us at an unfair disadvantage. As my monthly expenses grow, so does the realization that not only am I subjected to a higher tax rate due to my income level, but I'm also required to make student loan repayments on my already-taxed net income. This equates to a kind of double taxation, hindering financial progress and discouraging career advancement.

The core issue here is that calculating repayments on net income means we pay after taxes have already been deducted, effectively reducing the amount we can save or reinvest into our future. By shifting this calculation to gross income, we could alleviate a portion of our financial strain, ultimately allowing more young professionals like myself to focus on their careers without the weight of unnecessary financial burdens.

This change would not only provide immediate financial relief but also promote a fairer system where loan repayments align more accurately with our true earnings. It’s crucial that the policies in place support the economic stability of the nation's workforce, particularly those just beginning their careers.

We urge policymakers to consider amending the current system, ensuring that student loan repayments reflect our gross income. This modification would align more closely with the goal of alleviating the financial pressures on graduates. Please join us in calling for this essential change.
