Change school attendance policies affecting special rewards

Change school attendance policies affecting special rewards
The Issue
My sister is in Year 11 and has been struggling with severe period pains, sickness, and back pain. Every day she faces the uphill battle of attending school despite her health issues. Her teachers, though well-meaning, often threaten to exclude her from special "once in a lifetime" activities, such as prom and school trips, if her attendance isn't perfect. This creates a distressing dilemma for her: should she push through the pain or stay home to recuperate and lose out on joyful experiences with her peers?
This isn't just about one child—many students across the country face similar challenges. With mental health issues on the rise, it's alarming that current school attendance policies do not offer the support these students need. According to the National Health Service, about one in eight children and young people in the UK is mentally unwell. Furthermore, physical ailments should not be ignored as they significantly impact a child's day-to-day life and schooling.
These policies inadvertently punish those who need time off for legitimate health reasons. Rather than fostering an inclusive and understanding environment, the current approach aggravates the stress and anxiety these students face, further worsening their health conditions. Schools should nurture children's well-being, not penalize them for circumstances beyond their control.
To address this issue, we propose the integration of a more flexible attendance policy that takes individual health situations into account. We urge educational institutions to collaborate with health professionals to establish a system where students can provide valid documentation for absences due to medical or mental health reasons without fear of losing rewards or opportunities.
Decisions for these rewards should be based on behaviour or academic performance. Implementing a more empathetic approach could significantly improve students' mental health, academic performance, and overall school experience.
Let us not let outdated policies deny our children of the happiness and opportunities they deserve. Sign this petition to call on the Department for Education to revise and update school attendance policies across the UK to accommodate and support students with health-related absences. Together, we can create a more understanding and supportive educational environment for all.
