The Issue

I am a resident of Oregon and, like many others, I call this beautiful state home. However, as a low-income individual, it has become increasingly difficult for me to enjoy the natural wonders that Oregon State Parks have to offer. In recent years, prices for camping and parking have increased significantly, putting an even greater strain on my already tight budget. Once a frequent visitor of these parks, I now find myself unable to afford even a yearly pass, leaving me and many others unable to experience the tranquility and adventure these parks provide.

State parks are a treasure meant to be enjoyed by everyone, not just those who can afford them. They are public lands, meant to benefit all residents of Oregon, regardless of their income level. That's why I'm calling for a change in the pricing structure for Oregon State Parks, specifically to provide a 50% discount on camping fees, monthly parking fees, and daily parking passes for families and individuals who can prove eligibility for low-income status.

The hardship faced by low-income families is real and pressing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 11% of Oregon's population lives below the poverty line. That's over 450,000 people who might be missing out on the chance to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and experience all that our state parks have to offer because of financial barriers.

Implementing discounts for low-income families is not only a compassionate move but also a practical one. There are successful models from other states that Oregon can look to. For example, California offers the "Golden Bear Pass" for low-income seniors, certain groups of the disabled, and other qualifying individuals, allowing them major fee reductions. Introducing a similar initiative in Oregon will ensure that all residents, regardless of financial status, have the opportunity to enjoy our state parks.

Creating a more equitable pricing system can enhance the wellbeing of Oregon's citizens by promoting mental health, encouraging physical activity, and fostering a love for our environment. It will build stronger communities by allowing everyone, regardless of income, to gather, explore, and appreciate our shared natural heritage.

We urge the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Oregon State Legislature to take immediate action to adopt a pricing policy that includes a 50% fee reduction for low-income families. By doing so, we acknowledge the right of every Oregonian to access the natural beauty our state has to offer. Please sign this petition to support a fairer system for all families to enjoy the outdoor resources we are privileged to have right in our backyard.
