The Issue
Cyberbullying and harassment have become rampant issues in the digital age, profoundly affecting mental health, especially here in India. This petition represents not just a call for awareness but for tangible change that protects individuals from these harmful acts.
Having witnessed the devastating impacts of cyberbullying firsthand, I have seen friends and family members suffer silently under the weight of online harassment. The emotional toll is real and debilitating, leading to anxiety, depression, and in some extreme cases, even pushing individuals towards self-harm. Unfortunately, the current policies and systems in place do not sufficiently address or mitigate these issues, leaving many vulnerable and without recourse.
In India, Internet accessibility has grown exponentially, but awareness and protective mechanisms regarding cyberbullying have not kept pace. A survey by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) revealed that over 24% of students in India have been victims of cyberbullying. With the highest youth population in the world, such a figure represents millions of affected individuals.
The need for stronger policy and more stringent regulations is urgent. We call on the Government of India to implement comprehensive cyberbullying laws that include clear definitions, preventive measures, and enforcement mechanisms. This includes establishing dedicated cyber units within law enforcement agencies, creating platforms for safe reporting, and ensuring quick response teams to assist victims.
Furthermore, there should be campaigns to educate the public about the seriousness of cyberbullying and how individuals can safeguard themselves online. Schools, colleges, and workplaces should also play a pivotal role in promoting safe and respectful online communication.
Sign this petition to engage policymakers in India to take decisive steps in combating cyberbullying and to foster a safer digital environment for all. Let's stand together to make online spaces in India safe and inclusive for everyone.
