Change PCrew Dress Code

The Issue

The Pittsford Crew team is a place in which students from surrounding schools come together to share the common passion of rowing. However, this fall season has seen a change in our long-standing code of conduct and has added a dress code. this update states "I will fully wear my unisuit, including straps up on my shoulders, throughout any home and away regattas. If a uni is worn off the shoulders a sweatshirt/shirt/tank must be worn. I will wear a unisuit (including straps up on shoulders) or sweatshirt/shirt/tank throughout all on-water practices."

For many years the matter of rowers pulling down their unitard to their waist or going shirtless particularly during the hotter months of the year has been an issue for a select few adults associated with PCrew in one way or another. After the latest spring season, girls from the team came forward about their discomfort caused by some of these adults telling them to cover themselves and claiming it was part of the code of conduct (which at the time it was not). Now with the start of the new season with no warning or input from rowers or parents, the rules were changed.

Even when looking to more prestigious teams whether they are high schools, clubs, or colleges, their policies show no sign of a dress code with many going as far as to post shirtless pictures of their rowers on public social media platforms. It is clear that their rowing boards care for their rowers comfort and confidence in the staff above all else; so why can't ours?

In signing this petition you agree with the belief that the new dress code in the Pittsford Crew code of conduct is unfair and should be revised so the only circumstance in which a unitard MUST be worn all the way up (with straps on shoulders) should be from the time a rower or coxswain launches at a regatta to the time they return to the dock.
