Petition updateChange Oxford Dictionary’s Sexist Definition of ‘Woman’FIRST DEVELOPMENTS: social media radio silence + Google & Bing’s change

Whilst we’ve had no direct response from Oxford University Press yet, we have noticed a couple of significant changes.

Firstly, the official social media accounts of Oxford Dictionaries have gone strangely quiet since 10 days after the launch of our campaign. Also of note is that the channels are no longer replying  to people’s comments and tweets as they previously did. This includes many of your and our questions and comments to them.

Secondly, there was a silent and subtle change in the appearance Google and Bing’s search results when someone looks up a definition or synonym. Previously, the definition looked like  it was generated by Google and Bing. Recently, this changed to the definitions and synonyms being credited to Oxford, via a widget saying ‘From Oxford’ (Google) and Powered by Oxford Dictionaries(Bing), just like Yahoo has had all along. It is important that search engines directly quote their sources, the place from where they get such dangerous content. This way we now know for sure it is indeed Oxford's content and can focus our energies. People browsing and using the search engines' dictionary feature will now also be able to know these definitions/synonyms come from Oxford Dictionary and they are not what the whole internet thinks (how we often perceive search engines).

We would love to claim this as our campaign’s first victory, and believe Google & Bing might have taken this step in order to disassociate themselves with the definitions. However as we can’t prove it, we are just celebrating it as a small first step on the road to victory! Hope you will be celebrating too with us.
