The Issue

Having personally experienced bullying in a NHS healthcare surgery, I am acutely aware of the devastating impacts it can have on staff.  It erodes confidence, threatens mental health, and creates an unsafe working environment, which ultimately affects patient care as well.

This is a reality for many staff in GP practices where a significant power imbalance often exists between GP partners and NHS employees, leaving the latter vulnerable to intimidation.

Currently, many staff members find it challenging to report instances of bullying due to fear of retaliation, lack of anonymity, or disbelief that action will be taken when complaints are lodged, particularly in 'top heavy' partner led GP surgeries.

This leaves many suffering in silence, unable to find relief or justice.

According to findings by the NHS Staff Survey, a concerning number of healthcare workers have faced bullying, with around 25% reporting such experiences. Yet, this is likely only the tip of the iceberg, as many cases go unreported.

To address these issues, it is crucial that healthcare institutions establish robust and confidential systems for reporting bullying. First, mechanisms must be put in place to ensure that all reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality, protecting the identity of the whistleblower.  Secondly, we must establish an independent body to oversee the investigation of such complaints, ensuring an unbiased and thorough process. Third, creating an environment where staff feel safe to speak up without fear of retribution is essential; this can be supported through regular training and support systems for managing interpersonal conflicts.

Furthermore, it is important for there to be a clear policy on anti-bullying, with a well-defined process for reporting and addressing complaints.

Implementation of regular audits and progress reports can help keep institutions accountable and ensure policies are being followed.

By taking these steps, we can create healthier, safer work environments for all GP practice staff.

Bullying should never be tolerated in any workplace, particularly in healthcare settings where the wellbeing of both staff and patients is at stake.

We are calling on healthcare organisations, governmental health bodies, and regulatory agencies to take immediate action in establishing and enforcing effective reporting channels and protections for staff.

If you feel you cannot report internally, and believe patient safety, care, quality, safeguarding is at stake or Doctors' fitness to practise, contact the CQC, NHS England, GMC.

Sign this petition to stand with all NHS healthcare workers facing bullying and help enforce safe reporting procedures, ensuring that no staff member suffers in silence.
