Change.org, remove Paypal from your payment methods

The Issue

For change.org to work with Paypal completely undermines the purpose of the project.

Summary:

  • Paypal treats its users in ways that would be completely unacceptable for any other banking service.
  • They block users' accounts, withholding ALL of their money from them and refuse under any circumstances to justify or discuss their actions. At this stage, they make it impossible for the customer to contact them.
  • During the Corona Virus outbreak, Paypal continues to withhold millions of dollars worth of funds from undeserving victims all across the world. Anybody who pauses to think about this fact will realise that without any doubt, these policies will cause avoidable deaths.

This is a description of what happened to us, a young couple trying to make it while self-employed in Spain. There are tens of thousands of people in our position, many of them in some of the world's poorest countries, where there will be no financial support offered to them to help them survive during the COVID-19 outbreak. Our case is just the "light" version of Paypal's abusive actions.

Paypal blocked our account saying that they have deemed it to be "high risk". They have offered NO evidence or explanation.

In that act, they withheld our money, all of it. In our case, Paypal withheld around 1500 euros. We had already paid tax on that income. There are victims of Paypal who have had considerably more than that withheld from them.

When I ask why this has happened and plead for the opportunity to discuss our "high risk" status, they absolutely refuse to give any explanation.
They ignore every email. They ignore messages sent through social media. They end phone calls by hanging up.
Their line on the phone is "You have the option to choose who you work with. So does Paypal. You had the choice as to whether or not to work with Paypal. Paypal has decided not to work with you."
Of course, it was never an option for Paypal's victims to hold significant quantities of Paypal's money before making that choice.
No bank would be able to behave in this manner. Paypal, it seems, can do absolutely whatever it chooses.

Now, the world is in a very difficult position. Aside from the terrifying number of people that are dying of the virus itself, many more will die due to the economic issues that accompany it. Paypal, of course, is a company that will be benefitting greatly through everyone else's difficulties as the number of online payments skyrockets.

During this difficult time, Paypal are still refusing to respond to their victims, even when it is made clear that this will soon be a question of life and death.

Every time somebody supports a movement on change.org with a donation made via Paypal, they are financially supporting a company that abuses its power in a way no normal bank could get away with.

While Change.org supports this despicable company and its disgraceful abuse of power, every act of solidarity carried out by good-willed people on this platform will be tainted.
