Change.org Petition - make it mandatory for GP Doctor complaints to be filed with ICB
The Issue
My personal experience with inadequate local complaint logging against GP doctors, particularly partners in the practice, has driven me to initiate this petition. I firmly believe that all complaints/concerns against GP doctors, whether salaried GPs or partners need to be logged and reviewed by the Integrated Care Board (ICB) annually. The ICB should ask for any complaints/concerns from the surgery on an annual basis.
This step is crucial to ensure that no complaint is brushed under the rug, giving patients the justice and care they deserve.
In many instances, complaints/concerns against health practitioners, specifically general practitioners (GPs), have been unnoticed due to internal handling processes that lack transparency and accountability. For example, independent reviews have indicated that NHS GP practices receive numerous complaints, but data on these complaints are inconsistently recorded and monitored. This oversight leads to many errors or unacceptable practices continuing without rectification. I have seen the consequences of this firsthand as complaints against a Doctor was not taken seriously by the complaint handler and their behaviour was repeated again.
Making the logging of GP complaints with the ICB mandatory would be a transformative move towards better health care accountability. Having a centralized system ensures that all voices are heard, and problems are addressed systematically with proper oversight.
The NPR reported in 2020 that patients who felt their complaints were logged and reviewed properly reported a much higher satisfaction with their healthcare providers.
Moreover, systematically logging complaints with the ICB also provides critical data to analyze recurring issues or patterns of malpractice. This process helps not only in addressing individual complaints but also in improving overall healthcare practices and policies. A transparent and standardized complaint process is essential for building trust between patients and healthcare professionals.
Our healthcare system must commit to transparency and accountability to ensure the trust and safety of all parties involved. By signing this petition, you support a significant step towards creating a more efficient and transparent healthcare system, where patient complaints are rightfully logged, monitored, and addressed by the ICB.
