Hi, your honor. My name is Soccates Walker, and I am writing this letter on behalf of my brother Lamont Earl Epinger #674574 who was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated robbery at the age of 17 years old in Dallas county 204 judiciary courts on February 4th, 1994. You were the sitting judge at the time during his open plea. My brother was 17 years old first time ever in trouble, he is now 44 years old and still in prison without the eligibility of parole.

There was absolutely no physical violence in his case. no firearms discharged, nothing. There were also 2 16 year old co defendants who received 15 years in tdcj. I am writing this letter in good faith to bring him home. He made a mistake at the age of 17, But it shouldn't cost him his entire life on this earth. There are murderers who have served less time, I repeat no physical violence at all. and it was his  first time ever getting in trouble. He has been incarcerated 28 years now and has a great disciplinary record, works for the major on the units, and has several trades and educational certificates from school. I ask sincerely and with every humble bone in my body. Will you please consider looking into his case and consider the time reduction, or even advocating to help us get him free. He is a great man that made a mistake. I Promise. He hasn't seen freedom since he was a kid. I ask with the utmost respect, and pray that this letter reaches you in a god filled mood. Thank you again for even reading this.

Dear Mr. Walker:

I have heard and have handled many cases since 1994.  I do not have a personal recollection of these cases.  I understand what you are saying and how you feel about your brother.  And, I am sorry you are going through this. I have reviewed your email and have done a little bit of research into this matter.

It appears that you would need the current judge, the current district attorney and the current sheriff to agree with a commutation of sentence.  I cannot give you legal advice.  I am just saying that I believe that I cannot be the one to request a commutation of sentence.  I suggest that you get the advice of a lawyer as to how it is possible under law to get your brother released from jail earlier than his parole date.

There is an organization called the Innocence Project of Texas.  Although you are not claiming that your brother is innocent, they work with lawyers who are very experienced in getting people out of prison.  You may contact them to ask for free legal advice or for a referral to a lawyer who might be able to help you.  I don’t know if they will help you, but you should try.  Here is their email:  info@innocencetexas.org.  Their website says they don’t speak with people by telephone.

Respectfully,
