The Issue
I became aware of conduct by a GP within a GP surgery that deeply concerned me, particularly around the use of patient data without their consent - detriment to a patients' well-being. It was clear how upset this person was and brought it to the attention of outsiders, in the interests of safeguarding others.
The motive behind this violation? Exploitation and gain.
Those we trust to manage our health are supposed to protect our privacy and act in our best interests. However, certain general practitioners (GPs) and surgeries are entering into contracts that may compromise this sacred trust.
This is now never more relevant as the GP contract set between 2026 and 2027, has raised many questions about patient data sharing and the lack of an opt-out option being made clear.
Transparency and patient choice are vital components of the healthcare system, yet there seems to be a gap in ensuring these principles are upheld across all GP surgeries.
Statistics show that a significant percentage of patients are uninformed about how their data is used, which can lead to mistrust and hesitation in seeking care.
The current contractual arrangements often lack clarity, making it difficult for patients to understand or exert control over their personal health information.
Our objective is simple: we demand that the governing bodies implement clear opt-out provisions for patient data in all GP contracts in 2026/27.
We need new policies that clearly inform patients about how their data will be shared and give them a straightforward choice to opt-out without any negative consequences on their care.
It's crucial for the health agencies, in collaboration with GP surgeries, to develop a transparent framework that prioritizes patient autonomy and data protection.
By mandating these changes in the upcoming contracts, all healthcare consumers can trust that their personal information is secure and used appropriately and not mis-used for financial/personal gain.
It is very important when considering your privacy/data protection, that you also look to your local LMC to see if any of your Doctors at your practice reside on it.
The problems with some 'corrupt' Doctors as LMC members' is that:
- they can leverage their institutional authority for personal gain, political positioning
- they can undeclare self serving commercial ties, profiting from private diagnostic firms; locum agencies, or healthcare software vendors whilst lobbying the NHS to accept those services. This could mean your data sharing/privacy is at stake.
Please join me in this effort to safeguard our private health information, secure data and ensure that every patient in the UK has the ability and freedom to opt-out of data sharing if they choose.
Make it clear wording on GP surgery policy websites the right to opt out of data sharing; implement on noticeboards; written on surgery walls, distributed via leaflets on tables in waiting areas, disvussbin PPG meetings etc. Not everybody has access to the internet so will not see this on GP websites.
Google NHS, type 'opt out of sharing your health records, option 1', go on the NHS app, select then you are covered legally against any possible violation.
Or email your GP surgery and ask for this to be done - they have to respond.
