Change MLA font from Times New Roman to a cleaner serif font

The Issue

Multiple classmates of mine have had trouble reading the Times New Roman font that our essays are required to be in; therefore, they had a hard time writing their essays. Multiple serif fonts are much more readable and more accessible to students who have a hard time reading Times New Roman.

The Modern Language Association (MLA) has long used Times New Roman as the standard font for academic essays and scholarly works. While this tradition has its roots in history, it's crucial to question its relevance in contemporary times. Many students and educators find Times New Roman not only outdated but also less readable compared to other serif fonts available today. The purpose of a font is not merely aesthetic but also functional; it should facilitate clear communication and understanding.

In an age where inclusivity and accessibility are at the forefront of educational advancements, it is essential for MLA to reflect these values. By adopting a cleaner serif font, the MLA would not only align itself with contemporary educational goals but also ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.

Encourage the Modern Language Association to adopt a cleaner and more accessible serif font, such as Georgia or EB Garamond, which could cater to diverse learning needs and enhance the readability of academic essays. Your signature on this petition could be the force that inspires change, making academic writing more inclusive and accessible for every student. Please sign and support this necessary change.
