Change middle school start and end times in Fairfax County
The Issue
Every morning, I struggle to watch my child, barely awake, rush out the door to make it to the bus on time. The start time for our local middle schools is simply too early, and I know my child is not alone in this dilemma. With countless other families battling the same issue in our community, it’s clear that our current schedule is not conducive to the well-being and academic success of students.
Research has consistently shown that adolescents require more sleep to function optimally, both cognitively and emotionally. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., as this allows students to achieve the necessary 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Waking up at the crack of dawn forces kids to attend school in a sleep-deprived state, affecting their ability to concentrate, learn, and participate.
Our community’s current middle school schedule, which often sees classes beginning around 7:15 a.m., is significantly out of line with these recommendations. This early start time leads to long-term negative effects, such as increased stress levels, higher rates of absenteeism, and lower academic performance. Moreover, during early morning hours, commute conditions worsen, increasing the risk of accidents as sleepy adolescents make their way to school.
By adjusting our school’s start time to 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 3:15 p.m., we can work towards a practical and meaningful change that supports our children’s education, health, and safety. This slight shift not only aligns with scientific research but also provides a more stable and supportive environment for our students to thrive.
