Change how the NHS manages patients on waiting lists
The Issue
This year (2026) Our Dads life was cut tragically short due to systemic inefficiencies in the NHS's handling of waiting lists and care prioritization. He was switched off of the cancer pathway in the April 2025 before his scans were even done. When he had his CT scan at the beginning of May 2025 it was red-flagged, indicating an urgency that should have resulted in swift action, with a medical review expected within 4-6 weeks. Instead, he was left waiting for 5-6 months, receiving no prioritization despite his scan showing Indeterminate asymmetry of the right nasopharynx (a clear sign of early stages of nasopharyngeal cancer). Therefor an MRI should have been performed to rule this out. He was only called back in the September 2025 after regular trips back to his GP with worsening symptoms. This appalling delay allowed his cancer to progress to an irreversible stage, ultimately leading to his untimely passing, with a prognosis reduced to mere weeks to months. He suffered immensely, the physical pain he was in and the mental and emotional impact it had on him, knowing that he should have got the help he so much deserved - affected him every day. He knew that his life had been so unfairly taken away from him. He wouldn’t be here to make memories with his young Children and Grand children caused him such pain and sadness.
This isn’t just the story of Our Dad - it’s an alarming reflection of what many patients encounter every day. In the UK England alone, approximate figures show below.
7.4 million = treatment pathways (appointments/treatments waiting to happen)
6.2 million = actual people waiting
About 60.9% were waiting 18 weeks or less
About 39.1% were waiting more than 18 weeks Among them, countless lives hang in the balance, awaiting critical care that is delayed by cracks in the current system.
Furthermore, the NHS's practice of removing patients from the cancer pathway without adequate investigation exacerbates this crisis. It is crucial that the NHS institute stringent protocols to ensure that patients with red-flagged cases are seen within the appropriate timelines and are not removed from care pathways without thorough re-evaluation. All patients deserve timely, accurate, and compassionate treatment.
We urge the NHS to implement the following changes to prevent further suffering:
1. Improve tracking and prioritization systems for patients with critical conditions.
2. Establish accountability measures to monitor delays in diagnosis and treatment.
3. Maintain continuous communication with patients and families awaiting care, providing transparent timelines and updates.
4. Ensure a re-evaluation protocol before any patient is removed from a cancer care pathway.
Our Dad wanted us to make sure that his story was shared far and wide and to try and ensure that this doesn’t happen to anyone else. This petition is a call to action for the NHS and the UK government to address these dire issues urgently. We must ensure that no more lives are unnecessarily lost due to preventable administrative failures. Please sign and share this petition to drive change and protect others from similar heartbreak.
