Change how social housing is occupied

The Issue

My family and I have been living under incredibly challenging circumstances for the past six years. With seven children, two of whom were placed with me under a court order, we have been cramped into a three-bedroom property. Despite ongoing efforts, the council has yet to find us a size-appropriate home. This struggle has opened my eyes to a broader issue within our social housing system, affecting countless families like mine.

In my area, many larger properties, such as four or five-bedroom homes, are under-occupied. Often, these homes are held by smaller households who no longer require the extra space but choose to retain them due to the lack of adequate incentives to move. This situation strains the social housing system, as larger properties are not cycled back to the pool for families in dire need of space.

Statistics indicate that under-occupied houses contribute to the housing crisis by diminishing the availability of appropriately sized homes for families who genuinely need them. This creates a backlog in housing allocations, forcing councils to build or modify existing properties just to meet demand. An effective and humane solution is essential.

I propose that councils implement a well-structured incentive programme aimed at encouraging residents of under-occupied homes to move to properties that suit their current needs, including the number of bedrooms. Such a programme could offer financial assistance for moving costs, priority housing for smaller or more suitable properties, and other benefits that make the transition more appealing.

By re-evaluating how social housing is allocated and incentivized, we can alleviate pressure on councils and make family-appropriate housing more accessible to those who need it most. This change would not only benefit families crowding into small homes but also help create a more efficient and effective housing system for all.

Please join me in signing this petition to urge local councils to adopt a strategic approach to redistributing under-occupied social housing. Together, we can push for the changes needed to ensure everyone has a home that truly fits their needs.
